Do or Die Reviews
D’s purpose in writing his book, DO OR DIE, is to let his readers know that sometimes the people you call friends and the ones you associate yourself with have their own positive or negative field. The longer you hang around someone, the more vulnerable you are to their energy. Do Or Die offers friendship, trust and faith to its readers. It teaches us that we should never forget our faith even if we become so over whelmed by our surroundings. Do or Die is truly an inspiration. It captures so many emotions that leave the reader wanting more. The many different forms of spiritual aspects shown in this book is mind blowing and would go on forever in the one street novel.Do or Die is exceptionally well written. This story was easy to read, but still compromises a wide range of vocabulary and sentence structure. The author also provides determination and friendship that can appeal to the young mind in a very unique way. For example, the main character Malik shows his attention by telling his best friend Abraham after their crime “good. I got your back though” (D 143). D most defiantly knows how to hold the attention of his audience. This coming of age tale was truly captivating. The extremely graphic story that was told in this novel was similar to other graphic novels but what truly makes this story different is that it never really stopped getting your attention. The reader would feel the emotions as if it was genuine. They might laugh, and at times even shed a tear. The main characters in this book had tragedies in the past so you may at times find yourself really rooting for them at the end. This book possesses the elements for an undeniably interesting, thought-provoking story and very dramatic. The greatest strength of the novel, Do or Die, is that it is told in a completely realistic way. Yes, it is fun to read certain books like Road Dawgs and Bad Girlz, but none of these novels can compare to the realistic human traits as Do or Die. This exemplified when the main characters girlfriend clarifies how much she respects Abraham by saying, “he had a right to know, Malik. I can’t do this anymore. Even if he and I aren’t going to be together. I can’t disrespect him like that if I want him to be a part of my child’s life” (D 171). Also it was very impressive how the author made a lot of descriptive references to the city (New York) in which the story took place and the mini tour of the different areas that weren’t known to people. The greatest weakness of the book is that the main character didn’t have a happy ending. It is honestly one of the greatest books that I have ever read. With the graphic and extremely violent parts of this book I would absolutely recommend this book to mainly mature audiences. It has opened my eyes to all sorts of possibilities like understanding the fact that it is not about being good or bad it’s about the ones that either choose to evolve or remain complacent, and I know that it will have the same positive effect on other readers as well. The characters in this book were really realistic. I felt so connected to them and their stories. The one person that I felt most connected to was Abraham. He is a god fearing man who is partnered with a beast. He is so good that his allegiance to his best friend Malik threatens his chance to fulfill his life’s ambition. Over all I would like to sum that this book was magnificently interesting and a life learning experience.
This is a book about two lifelong friends that live in Harlem. There's this boy named Malik and his best friend's name is Abraham. One day Malik walks in on his older sister being raped by a well known drug dealer that everyone fears. Malik spots his gun lying on the table. So he grabs it and eventually shoots him. That was the day he committed his first murder. Abraham, who is the good one of the two, unfortunately gets dragged into it when malik's sister has to stay at his place to hide out for a while. As the book goes on They both commit multiple murders and start to sell drugs. Abraham tries to steer clear of all the murders and remain faithful to GOD but the new life of sex, money and greed, that malik has introduced him to is very addictive. Also he doesnt see how he could just leave malik, when he knows that people are out to get him, due to all the dug selling. in the end, they give up murder and drugs and malik and abraham open up their own church. but karma catches up to them because one day when service is over, a young boy, about 15 or16 comes up and shoots him because he found out that malik was the one that shot his brother.i really really love this book. it is my favorite of all time because it;s a page- turner and evey detail was interesting.
I read this book a while back and it was the first of the genre that I had picked up. I can truly say that I enjoyed this book greatly. There are a number of elements that are intertwined throughout the development of each character that kept me guessing. I found myself multiple times attempting to predict the next phase of the story as if I were watching it in movie form, only to discover that I was enjoyably wrong. Even if you have never been exposed to the particular neighborhood setting or lifestyle, you will enjoy and respect the work created by this author. I'd definitely recommend it.
This book was off the chain from the beginning to the end.
i thought it was a really good book never thought it would end that way.
