This is the story for you.Book Description: In a tiny town in East Tennessee, up in the foothills of the Appalachians, there's a mining company more than a century old, that's illegally shipping millions of dollars of drugs across the country. The mining company hides the drugs under tons of coal, in a special steel container that no law enforcement officer could ever find. The man who runs the mining company is ruthless behind the scenes, but he's publicly well-known as a town icon who does lots of good and would never be suspected of being a criminal. This secret drug operation has operated safely in the shadows, behind the founder's good name and public image, for more than fifteen years. In fact, only one detective has ever gotten close to busting it all open, but he died in a very mysterious way.Danny Acuff, a prior Marine and hot-shot Memphis detective, knows none of this. He doesn't know about the hidden dealings of Snyder Mining. He doesn't about the murdered detective, who nearly solved the case. All Danny knows is he must leave Memphis, where he loves his job and is quickly climbing the ladder of success. Danny must move east to salvage his marriage, if he can, and focus on returning to law school. And while he's waiting for law school to start, he figures he'll pick up some side work as a detective in a small town.Unfortunately for Danny, he's about to take a job that in a small town dominated by Snyder Mining and its "good-hearted" founder.Danny will soon be fighting for his life, against a couple of retired Special Forces men who do Snyder Mining's dirty work. These two men are further backed up by plenty of cruel, good ole' boys from the hills. Men who know how to shoot, apply pain, and hide in the woods.Danny's about to enter a very hazardous world, and he'll soon be watching almost helplessly as cops die around him and he rushes foward in an attempt to solve the most dangerous case he's ever come across....

Take Down by Stan R. Mitchell started as a serial about Detective Danny Acuff. I am ashamed to admit that I read, and enjoyed, the first episode in the series, but then became side-tracked and didn't find my way back to read the rest. I was very happy to recently discover that all six of the first episodes had been merged into this one book. Danny Acuff is a serious mess, but a very insightful and detail oriented detective. This book follows him on his journey through small town American crime that unfurls into some pretty major felonies. The bonds that he breaks and forms along the way are an interesting back-story. But the real story is the mystery, raising as many questions as it answers. I hope there will be plenty more to come as true, realistic crime story/mysteries are difficult to find. "I received an advance readers copy of this book from the author at my request."

Love this series! Good, clean police procedural.Ready for the next one, can't wait! This is a cast of realistic, likeable (a few unlikable) characters with a storyline that will keep your interest. New books can't come fast enough for me.

This is a review for Danny Acuff Books 1-3. They are very short reads and one continues on to the next read. Danny was an up and coming detective in Memphis. His long hours and his wife's long hours as a lawyer, spell disaster for the marriage. They move to Knoxville so he can take as a detective in a small town not far from there. The good ole boy network is alive and functioning well. The only people Danny can trust are the police chief and his "partner" Colette. The police captain is incompetent, but the good ole boys like him that way. Book #1 deals mostly with Danny's failed marriage and an introduction to the town. He has 3 cases to work on, but doesn't get a chance to really get started on them. Book #2 gives Danny a chance to get started on the cases. The first case is a pharmacist who reported a $170,000 theft, including drugs and cash. The second case was a hit and run, which Danny and Colette quickly determine is a murder. The third case involves the mining company and is the real reason the Chief hired Danny in the first place. Book #3 gives Danny a chance to solve two of these cases and leaves you in suspense over the third one.

First of all, if you haven't read the other books in the series, you owe it to yourself to read them first. Danny will seem like a good friend by the time you get to this one. For those that have been reading from the start, you probably have been enjoying them as much as I have or you wouldn't be this far. Each book flows into the next, sort of like a TV Mini-Series. Danny is a detective in the little town of Akins and it turns out there is a mining company there that isn't turning out a lot of product, but is making bunches of money. Naturally Danny has to stir things up and incurs the wrath of his Captain, who gets so riled up it looks like his head is going to explode. Danny makes it his personal mission to take Synder Mining down and CEO John Snyder with it. Maybe in the next book. :) Quick read with lots of action!

You need to know ahead of time that this series is a bit like a play where each act builds upon the previous one and builds to a crescendo to the finale. It leads to the climax that has had you sitting on the edge of your seat the entire time. Hopefully, you are at this point. If for some reason you got here without having read the first 5 books in the series, you are in luck! The author has put them all together in a book called Crash. It will really help when you get to this book. This is a novella. It was not meant to complete the story from beginning to end. Okay, now for the final act we have all been waiting for. There is crime and corruption in the little town of Akin and Danny has discovered the head of the snake. This is where we get to see the snake get netted. Pop some popcorn and grab your favorite beverage, because this is a doozey!

Danny's FacebookSeemed like a lot of facebook pages I've read. 'Danny did this and Danny did that...'. How realistic would it be for a Marine war hero to stay on a small town he had no ties to instead of going back to a job he loved in a big city. Especially after getting slapped in the face with infidelity and divorce. Hmmmm.

Detective Danny Acuff, Book 1 by Stan R. Mitchell is more episode 1 than book 1. But it has a very compelling story line and a cast of interesting characters. I will certainly be read the subsequent episodes. This is being written as a police drama and I fear that the cases may eventually take a back seat to the characters. I can hardly wait to see. HUGE cliff hanger.

Remember Bill, your friendly neighborhood pharmacist, who was suspected stealing from his own company? Well he commits suicide in this one. Or did he? Danny doesn't think so. He sets about to collect the evidence and hopefully connect it to Snyder Mining. Remember these are novellas, not full length novels. It is action packed!
