2.5 starstoo much angst in this one for me
A grieving father, exhausted from taking care of his now three year old daughter and his wife as she valiantly fought cancer. A fight she painfully lost. Wesley is feeling lost himself. He loved his wife deeply and to experience her suffering for such a prolonged period of time profoundly affects him. He just wants to escape all the people and their condolences. He is so overwhelmed. The comfort he feels when his little girl comes to get him for dinner, even though she needs a lot of care and attention he'd rather concentrate on his little "Dingo" - Marie to most others. He's shocked to find his mother has invited his former best friend Saul. Another ball player, but from an opposing team. It's just what Wesley needs for a brief time. An invitation to come to Florida if things get to be too much is thrown out there. Both Saul and Wesley are surprised when Wesley contacts him and asked if he and Marie can come down there?Once in Florida Wesley starts to feel again. He was so numb and overwhelmed. Tired of everyone's pity and needing a fresh start for both he and Marie. She has been asking about her Mom regularly. Questions Wesley didn't feel competent to answer. Having Saul to remind him of happier times, distract Marie, as well as enchant her made a huge difference. When Saul let's a bomb drop about his orientation it shocks Wesley. Initially he feels different about Saul, but he can't keep the distance for long. Saul and Wes are very different, but they are some things they both value: family, Integrity and honesty. When Saul gives him and Marie the best birthdays ever Wesley knew he was goner. His heart feels full and broken at the same time. Or rather broken and repaired by this wonderful man. It seems sometimes like Marie is Saul's daughter. Saul already cares about her so much. He's excited to see her. Is very patient with her. Knows just what to do as if he's had practice beyond the brief time the three of them were together. Well he has as an Uncle.Saul tells Wesley how much Marie looks like her Dad. He and others see how well Wesley has taken care of her. Always putting her needs above his own. Which is why he is careful with his burgeoning feelings for Saul. Things seem so easy and natural with Saul. Gradually their close friendship rekindles and initially subtly changes. But he can't do anything that might damage his relationship with his daughter. The progression of their relationship from friends to lovers is slow, hesitant, and sweet. The importance of their nuclear families is demonstrated by family interventions & conferrals and laughter, as well as acceptance and congratulations for them.
A great story of love and loss. A great book and the title is different than what is listed on here. This says "Follow Through" when I purchased it on Kindle, but now it says, "Coming Through". Go figure.
This was a sweet, charming read, with likeable characters and an uncomplicated but beguiling story. Perfect for a lazy afternoon.
