The understanding of the doctrine of principles that informs at least the latter portion of Plato's work and continued at the heart of the Academy's research program after Plato's death is still far from satisfactory, but the essays in this slender volume, the best of which, perhaps, is Nikulin's comprehensive introduction, at least ensure that the Anglophone scholar has no longer any excuse for not being familiar with the state of thinking on the matter. It is to be hoped that as a result the debate can finally shift decisively away from whether or not such a doctrine existed, and toward its meaning and value, for which inquiry these essays offer many tantalizing suggestions.
