Can we talk about Maka and Soul being extremely open communicators and how much they trust and respect each other and literally anything Maka and Soul

Great battle scene with Maka and Soul. They are so great together. I welcomed Black Star's absence. He's the weak link in the story for me. Crona has run away but I hope they come back soon. The hidden witches in Death City were sold out by Medusa who's now locked in DWMA's dungeon. Obviously, no one trusts her. But she just gave up Arachne's stronghold location so let's see what comes from that.

This is the longest arc I've seen in a manga to date. Please stop iiiiiiit. There's major art problems. The new style is weird and doesn't translate well. There's also multiple times that in one frame the characters coat is shredded and then goes back to being perfectly fine (with no flash backs) in the next frame as if that never happened. It's things like that that bother me.

I so wanted Crona to stay. So glad he stood up for himself.

So to put it simply, I don't normally give a manga series that looks like scrapped Tim Burton characters and more action than substance a rating this high. To put it specifically; Soul Eater is balls out entertaining as balls with balls on top. It's a prototypical school-fantasy series that tries to be Harry Potter and the Nightmare Before Christmas, tries cocaine, develops a split personality and decides that it's both. And I'm not trying to fanboy but Soul Eater was the perfect show to start out with as it got me into the medium of anime and manga in the first place. The characters, action, and costumes try to be as over the top and flashy as possible just for the hell of it and that's really what dragged me into it. The show has three main teams of characters; two pairs and one threesome, a bunch of villains, and a ton of supporting characters, that each have their own abilities and personalities. The author takes characters from anywhere and everywhere in regards to halloween stereotypes; Death, witches, Mary Shelley wannabes and after skepticism, I found that making this halloween world actually works. The first three episodes introduce the main teams and setting, and then treats the building blocks of the show like clay and does whatever it wants, adding new characters, villains, settings, trials, tribulations, plot elements and powers, and the plot still manages to chug along at a strangely consistent pace. The dialogue throughout is pretty heartfelt but many times painfully corny in addition to the fact that there's a lot of fun humor in the series(or rather any time Excalibur is around, even if the wonderful stories about him were in the manga not much is told about him). Despite there being a huge cast of characters, some of the main characters and antagonists don't even interact with each other and could care less about them because they were just there to fight each other, leaving some of the pivotal parts of the series as action fodder that only looks cool but isn't relevant. Plus if you're looking for a deep manga don't read Soul Eater, it's able to play with the emotions but it's fairly shallow and not thought provoking whatsoever. I wanted to see it as a series that comments on being free from death makes one mad with power but even that shows how far I'm stretching for at least some substance to the comic. The characters are good if not very deep, but the plot is a little wonky. The setting is most of all what confused me. There's a world that features London but also has bizarre areas like the DWMA, and I wanted to know more about why they have the students do all this in the first place. Why are they learning? I'll never know. I also have seen the show twice, and what I noticed most about the manga was they toned down the so called offensive content in the show. The manga boasts way more panty shots, blood flying from orifices and aerial expletives, which I don't understand why the cut it out of the show. However when I want to sit down and read, I want to think critically whereas on TV I can just be spoonfed, so overall given the carefree artistic aspect of Soul Eater, it works better as an anime.

The cover to this volume is a bit misleading, as the blonde guy who is pictured on the cover, the guardian of the teeny young witch Mosquito has by the hand, never appears in the book. That's too bad as his conflicted status as protector of this young girl, who is a witch and therefore potentially evil, while not being evil at all himself has been used with great effect by Ohkubo when he picks the plot thread up, which is far to rarely. The volume deals primarily with continuing conflicting plots by Arachnaphobia and Medusa to undermine DWMA, each for their own reasons and in their own manners. Arachnephobia continues direct assaults and the location and employment of demon weapons to keep Shinigami-sama and his troops off balance, while Medusa seems to work far more indirectly, by deception and manipulation. The characters begin to add surprising depth as the story goes on, especially for a manga that opened with such shallow violence and fun oriented characters. it is especially effective as the students and teachers at DWMA have not lost their quirkily amusing nature nor has the writing lost its wry tone, even though the emotional impact and depth of character and story has been ratcheted far beyond the levels found at the beginning of the story.

this was absolutely great! obviously the anime of soul eater is done, but made this so wonderful was that most of it was left out of the anime series, so it was brand new adventures! alot of interesting side plots and advancements that just werent included. they make the story make more sense so that was really great.i also really enjoyed seeing the companionship in this one.soul is really protective and helpful to maka, he is her perfect partner.Jacqueline refuses to leave kim's side and will follow her down any path she choses.ox and kilik work well together as well, and kilik proves to be loyal so multiple parties.marie is steadfast to stein even through her sorrow.anyway the manga was lovely.

Holy Cow! A lot has happened... The battle at the "BREW" had everyone on edge. Chrona has essentially disappeared. Maka has become even more incredible than I thought which means I may actually start to like her a little bit more. I think two students have just crossed over the dark side. And, Medusa just showed up in a random dungeon somewhere. I haven't a clue what is actually happening, but things have gotten very, very interesting again. I vote we kill Medusa now and forget about the knowledge she has. (I am really heartless today... sorry about that) I feel like keeping her alive will just cause a lot of issues in the long run.

This volume was pretty good, and the plot keeps improving as it goes! I absolutely love Soul dedication to Maka and how he's always pulling her out of situations especially now with the ever present threat of madness. If anything, being the sucker for good romance that I am I think Soul and Maka would make a really good couple! The plot is really heating up! And just when I think I'm finally figuring things out another mystery appears! Ohkubo really does love to keep people guessing but that is probably one of the things that makes Soul Eater so interesting! Can't wait to start the next volume~

Truthfully, this was an alright volume, sure Maka got stronger with some great speeches but it was undercut by the silliness of Blair's story that it felt like the power was unearned or pointless against a throwaway enemy. Kim and Jackie and how they acted at the end seemed out of place for loyal friends as well. Maka not telling anyone was a frustrating common mistake characters make in bad movies. Butttt still love Soul+Maka so .... 3 stars!

This volume wasn't terrible but it wasn't nearly up to the quality I expect from this series. Sloppy storytelling really took away from what could have been a great plot and even some great twists and turns at the end weren't enough to make this more than an okay volume.I've written a full review for this volume for the website Kuriousity, which can be found here: http://www.kuriousity.ca/2013/04/revi...

I like this volume only because we get to see our characters in a vulnerable situation, the enemy has the advantage and DMWA is in serious trouble. Soul and Maka along with Kid Liz and Patty go on an assignment. Kid Liz and Patty leave Maka and Soul alone to fight a clown, a being born from madness. Maka and Soul defeat the clown and gain a new soul resonance ability called demon hunter.

Further proof that the manga is much better than the anime, especially when it comes to character and plot development. Ohkubo's art was simply top notch in this one. Warning: this book gets awfully bloody in the middle! Also, Maka is still the best :D

Finally! I'm finally past all the stuff covered in the anime. It's not like it was a total slog, but the story just doesn't stand up all that well to a re-read.

This one and the end of the previous one are where the manga is drastically different from the anime. It was worth re-reading now that I have finished the anime.
